HOW A GAS LEAK CAN BE HARMFUL

Natural Gas is used in houses to cook food and for various other household chores, like heating water in a water heater. This means you end up using a lot of gas inside the house. This is risky in case there is a gas leakage. Hence, natural gas has a pungent smell that easily spreads in the entire house bringing to your notice that it is leaking from a particular source. You can then take quick action.
Natural gas is a flammable resource. Even a small spark or faulty electrical outburst can cause fire and explosion in the house if it is exposed to the leaked gas. This results in great loss to human life, the infrastructure of your house and harms your neighbours. It is not a small accident but a major calamity. It poses danger to the one present at the site of explosion and people nearby. Hence, keep lighters, matchsticks, and flammable objects away at safe places.

The leakage can also cause suffocation. Continuous exposure to the gas and the odour will lead to problems in breathing and you can fall unconscious. This can cause death if no one rescues you at the right time. A gas leakage can be very harmful for you and your family members. You should also have good ventilation in your house allowing the leaked gas to leave the surrounding and escape into the environment, thereby, reducing the volume of gas inside the house.
The furnace you use to cook food can be faulty many times and would not let the natural gas burn effectively. This will cause the residue carbon monoxide to accumulate in your kitchen and spread in the entire house making you sick. If there is no proper ventilation, you tend to breathe in this carbon monoxide gas, which is dangerous to your health. Inhaling the poisonous gas will reduce the amount of oxygen in your body organs and the brain. This can lead to disorders and even death.

Once you have already inhaled the injurious carbon monoxide, you will possess symptoms like headache, an upset stomach, unclear vision, and giddiness. You will be unable to even stand properly. Try to move into fresh air if you undergo these symptoms. If carbon monoxide poisoning is left untreated, it can lead to death.
In this way, a minor leakage of gas can cause major ill effects to your health and body. You can even die instantly if the leakage is effective and you are not able to escape the accident. Therefore, regularly keep a check on gas pipes, stoves, furnaces, and water heaters in order to avoid any leakages. Always stay alert in case of sudden leakages and be ready to face the exposure to natural gas. In such situation, you should be able to handle the problem escape the catastrophe. Hence, you should have lots of ventilation in your house at the correct places to keep the house airy and this will make your rescue easier.
